Rutabagas are on sale at No Frills this week, 10lbs for $5.00. If this doesn’t excite you, I completely understand. For many years, when I thought of Rutabaga, it conjured up memories of a mushy, bitter side dish on the holiday dinner table. With the dawning of Pinterest, I realized that there is a better way to actually enjoy this nutritious, inexpensive root vegetable.
Not only is this a tasty way to prepare them, it is perfect for those who are watching their carb intake but need a “french fry” fix. They’re not as crunchy, but still delicious! Feel free to use whatever spices you like, but salt, pepper and garlic powder are a must for me. You could add something spicy like cayenne or Cajun seasoning, a lemon herb blend, even some parmesan cheese. Use whatever oil you like too.
Ingredients
1 medium Rutabaga, peeled and cut into spears
1 Tsp garlic powder
salt and pepper to taste
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp paprika
1-2 Tsp olive oil
Directions
Preheat oven to 400 degrees.
In a large bowl, combine rutabaga spears with oil and spices. Toss until coated evenly.
Spread evenly on a foil lined baking sheet, but do not crowd too close together. Bake until the “fries” are tender inside and crisped on the outside, about 45 minutes.
